    Combining cosmological datasets: hyperparameters and Bayesian evidence

    A method is presented for performing joint analyses of cosmological datasets, in which the weight assigned to each dataset is determined directly by it own statistical properties. The weights are considered in a Bayesian context as a set of hyperparameters, which are then marginalised over in order to recover the posterior distribution as a function only of the cosmological parameters of interest. In the case of a Gaussian likelihood function, this marginalisation may be performed analytically. Calculation of the Bayesian evidence for the data, with and without the introduction of hyperparameters, enables a direct determination of whether the data warrant the introduction of weights into the analysis; this generalises the standard likelihood ratio approach to model comparison. The method is illustrated by application to the classic toy problem of fitting a straight line to a set of data. A cosmological illustration of the technique is also presented, in which the latest measurements of the cosmic microwave background power spectrum are used to infer constraints on cosmological parameters.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, submitted to MNRA

    An improved micro-reactor cell for IR spectroscopic studies of heterogeneous catalysis was built around a 5.8 GHz microwave cavity. The reactor can operate at 20 bars and with conventional heating up to 720 K, with reactant gas flows velocities (GHSV) from 25 000 to 50 000 h−1. The temperature of the sample under microwave irradiation was measured by time resolved IR emission spectroscopy. The first experiment performed was the IR monitoring of the desorption of carbonates induced by irradiating an alumina sample by microwaves at 5.8 GHz

    Eigenvalue interlacing and weight parameters of graphs

    Eigenvalue interlacing is a versatile technique for deriving results in algebraic combinatorics. In particular, it has been successfully used for proving a number of results about the relation between the (adjacency matrix or Laplacian) spectrum of a graph and some of its properties. For instance, some characterizations of regular partitions, and bounds for some parameters, such as the independence and chromatic numbers, the diameter, the bandwidth, etc., have been obtained. For each parameter of a graph involving the cardinality of some vertex sets, we can define its corresponding weight parameter by giving some "weights" (that is, the entries of the positive eigenvector) to the vertices and replacing cardinalities by square norms. The key point is that such weights "regularize" the graph, and hence allow us to define a kind of regular partition, called "pseudo-regular," intended for general graphs. Here we show how to use interlacing for proving results about some weight parameters and pseudo-regular partitions of a graph. For instance, generalizing a well-known result of Lov\'asz, it is shown that the weight Shannon capacity Θ∗\Theta^* of a connected graph \G, with nn vertices and (adjacency matrix) eigenvalues λ1>λ2≥.˙.≥λn\lambda_1>\lambda_2\ge\...\ge \lambda_n, satisfies \Theta\le \Theta^* \le \frac{\|\vecnu\|^2}{1-\frac{\lambda_1}{\lambda_n}} where Θ\Theta is the (standard) Shannon capacity and \vecnu is the positive eigenvector normalized to have smallest entry 1. In the special case of regular graphs, the results obtained have some interesting corollaries, such as an upper bound for some of the multiplicities of the eigenvalues of a distance-regular graph.     Bomb-<sup>14</sup>C analysis of ecosystem respiration reveals that peatland vegetation facilitates release of old carbon

    The largest terrestrial-to-atmosphere carbon flux is respired CO&lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt;. However, the partitioning of soil and plant sources, understanding of contributory mechanisms, and their response to climate change are uncertain. A plant removal experiment was established within a peatland located in the UK uplands to quantify respiration derived from recently fixed plant carbon and that derived from decomposition of soil organic matter, using natural abundance &lt;sup&gt;13&lt;/sup&gt;C and bomb-&lt;sup&gt;14&lt;/sup&gt;C as tracers. Soil and plant respiration sources were found respectively to contribute ~ 36% and between 41-54% of the total ecosystem CO&lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt; flux. Respired CO&lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt; produced in the clipped (‘soil’) plots had a mean age of ~ 15 years since fixation from the atmosphere, whereas the &lt;sup&gt;14&lt;/sup&gt;C content of ecosystem CO&lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt; was statistically indistinguishable from the contemporary atmosphere. Results of carbon mass balance modelling showed that, in addition to respiration from bulk soil and plant respired CO&lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt;, a third, much older source of CO&lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt; existed. This source, which we suggest is CO&lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt; derived from the catotelm constituted between ~ 10 and 23% of total ecosystem respiration and had a mean radiocarbon age of between several hundred to ~ 2000 years before present (BP). These findings show that plant-mediated transport of CO&lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt; produced in the catotelm may form a considerable component of peatland ecosystem respiration. The implication of this discovery is that current assumptions in terrestrial carbon models need to be re-evaluated to consider the climate sensitivity of this third source of peatland CO&lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt;
